Classic Rock?

The guys in my office insist on listening to the radio all day. I prefer quiet, I tend to focus on the music and get distracted from what I am doing, but it’s in the other room and as long as it’s not too loud I am fine.

They listen to the same classic rock station every day, so we hear a lot of the same stuff over and over. Yesterday the Classic Rock station played Def Leppard “Pour Some Sugar on Me”. Both of the guys are in their fifties, one said “What are they playing?” The Other guy didn’t have a clue. Neither had ever heard the song.

Yeah kids, “Pour Some Sugar on Me” are now Classic Rock!

My definition of Classic Rock was music of a particular era, late 60s through the 1970s. It’s not a hard and fast rule, some 80s stuff made it in, but usually it was the work of artists from that era, like Springsteen. Born in the USA is most definitely Classic Rock even though it came out in the 80s.

I didn’t think that as music aged or time went by newer music would become “Classic”. The 80s had a lot of hair bands like Poison, are they now Classic Rock? Will I be hearing Un Skinny Bop on my office radio soon? How old does a song need to be to become classic? When will “Smells Like Teen Spirit” qualify?

God help us will Linkin Park be included in this genre one day? All of their songs sound the same to me, but will they be classics in the year 2030? Maybe so? Maybe we will see a Linkin Park / Jackson Browne tour because will both be Classic Rock. Of course Jackson will be 82 then.
